What a Balcony Railing Can Actually Hold

Railing planters are the most efficient use of a small balcony and the easiest to get wrong. The pot is rarely the weak point. The bracket, the fixing and the railing itself are.

Work out the filled weight first

Start from volume. Damp potting mix is roughly 1.2 to 1.5 kg per litre, so a 10-litre railing planter carries something like 12 to 15 kg of soil once watered. Add the pot. Add water sitting in a saucer if there is one. A pair of them on a single rail can easily be 30 kg hanging outboard of the building, and that load swings in wind.

Outboard load is worse than it looks

A planter hooked over a railing does not press straight down. It levers against the top rail, and the further the pot sits from the rail the harder it pulls. That is why two planters of the same weight can behave very differently: the slim one sitting close to the rail is far kinder to the bracket than the wide one hanging away from it.

Practical limits

• Keep railing planters light: plastic or resin, not glazed ceramic.
• Prefer several small planters spread along the rail over one large one.
• Check that the bracket clamps rather than merely hooks, if the balcony is exposed.
• Face the drainage inward, or fit a saucer, so water does not fall on a neighbour below.

What we will not tell you

We cannot tell you what your railing is rated for. That depends on the building, the fixing and the condition of the metal or masonry, none of which we can see. What we can give you is the empty weight, the volume and the material of every planter we list, which is what you need in order to ask that question properly.

If in doubt, put it on the floor

A planter on the balcony floor carries its load straight into the slab and cannot fall outward. Where there is any uncertainty about a railing, particularly in an older building or on an upper floor, the floor or a stand with a wide base is the answer. It is less elegant and it is considerably harder to get wrong.
